These guidelines are based on the belief that both parents are responsible for caring for their minor children and based on the spouses’ custody arrangements. North Carolina calculates child support based on the following:

• Health insurance premiums paid by either party
• Work-related child care expenses
• Pre-existing child support obligations and responsibility for other children
• Extraordinary costs, including certain education, medical and transportation expenses
